German influencer Younes Zarou‘s reel has gone viral on the internet. In the clip, he sets out to test how safe India is by leaving an iPhone in a public place in Kerala. Around 4:30 PM local time, Younes placed the phone on a platform, walked away, and returned two hours later. To his surprise and that of millions watching, the phone was still there, untouched. While some passersby noticed the device, no one attempted to take it, which many saw as a reflection of Kerala’s civic sense and honesty.

Mixed Reactions from the Internet

The video, captioned “How safe is India??? Location: Kerala,” has already got over 38 million views on Instagram, with thousands of comments flooding in. While some users applauded the incident as proof of public integrity, others questioned whether it was staged.

One user wrote, “This is parallel India.” Another commented, “Come to my town, the phone will be gone in 10 seconds.”

Some viewers pointed out that the presence of a large tripod and camera equipment near the phone could have discouraged theft. One person remarked, “If someone had taken your phone, this video would never be posted. I know you want to show the clean side of India to gain more Indian followers, but at least show some reality.” Others shared personal experiences, including a user who claimed, “Meanwhile, my phone was stolen from my pocket.”

Leaving valuable items unattended to see if anyone takes them is a social experiment that influencers around the world have been performing for years. These videos are designed to assess the safety of a city or region and often spark debates about honesty, safety, and public behaviour.

Younes Zarou’s Kerala experiment is just the latest to ignite conversation, with opinions split between admiration and scepticism. Whether staged or genuine, the clip has certainly added to the ongoing discussion about India’s safety and the perception of its cities.

While the video portrays a positive image of Kerala, the mixed online reactions demonstrate that the concept of “safety” can vary significantly depending on one’s location within India. What’s clear, however, is that Younes Zarou’s two-hour iPhone test has captured global attention and become yet another talking point in the country’s ongoing safety narrative.
