Science education YouTube channel Veritasium is undergoing its most significant transformation since its launch in 2011. Founder Derek Muller has clarified that while the channel is changing structurally, he is not retiring or stepping away entirely. The update comes amid online speculation about Muller’s reduced on-screen presence and long-term plans for the channel.

The Electrify Deal and What It Means

In April 2023, Muller sold a stake in Veritasium to Electrify, a firm that invests in creator-led businesses. The partnership was aimed at securing the channel’s future while addressing the instability that often comes with creator-led careers.

For more than a decade, Muller ran Veritasium largely on his own, handling writing, research, filming, and editing. He has spoken about the constant pressure of the creator economy, where income and reach can shift sharply due to algorithm changes.

With Electrify managing operations such as hiring, compliance, and business support, Veritasium has transitioned from a personal project into a structured media company.

Growth, Scale and Channel Stats

Since the deal, Veritasium’s operating costs have increased nearly fourfold, reflecting expanded production and a larger team. At the same time, the channel’s growth has accelerated.

As of late 2025:

  • Subscribers: Nearly 20 million
  • Total views: Over 3.6 billion
  • Average views per video: Around 2 million, with several videos crossing 10 million views

The subscriber base has grown by roughly 50 percent since the partnership, underlining the impact of scaling beyond a single-creator model.

Less Screen Time, Continued Creative Control

Viewers may notice fewer appearances by Muller in future uploads. Some videos may not feature him on camera at all. However, he remains involved in shaping the editorial direction and content standards of the channel.

The guiding principle of Veritasium, focused on truth, accuracy, and curiosity-driven learning, remains unchanged. The aim is to build a brand that can outlast any one individual, similar to how large media organisations operate.

Balancing Work and Personal Life

The shift also reflects a personal decision. Muller, now a father of four and recently married, has spoken about the need to protect family time and avoid burnout. By selling equity and sharing responsibility, he has secured both financial stability and long-term continuity for the channel.

Rather than slowing down Veritasium, the move is intended to make it sustainable for decades to come.

Who Is Derek Muller

Derek Muller was born in Australia and raised in Canada. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics from Queen’s University and a PhD in Physics Education Research from the University of Sydney. His academic work explored why people continue to misunderstand scientific concepts even after formal education.

That research directly shaped Veritasium, whose name comes from Latin and means “an element of truth”.

What Makes Veritasium Different

Veritasium stands out for its hands-on storytelling approach. Muller combines street interviews, real-world experiments, myth-busting, animations and expert discussions to explain complex ideas.

Topics range from electricity and quantum mechanics to black holes, gravity, and artificial intelligence. The channel is known for using everyday examples to explain advanced science without oversimplifying it.

Beyond YouTube and Industry Recognition

Outside YouTube, Muller has contributed to major science programmes and documentaries for platforms such as Netflix, ABC, and Discovery Channel, including work on Bill Nye Saves the World.

Veritasium has won a Streamy Award for Science and Education and is widely used in schools and universities as a learning resource.

In 2025, the channel also released a widely discussed video examining the risks of AI-generated “fake science” content, reinforcing its emphasis on expert-led, fact-based storytelling.

Veritasium Is Changing, Not Ending

Veritasium is no longer just a creator channel. It is now a collaborative organisation employing writers, researchers, animators, and producers across the world.

For creators, Muller’s journey offers a clear lesson: long-term growth sometimes requires letting go of full control. Instead of burning out or fading away, Veritasium is positioning itself as a lasting science education institution, built to evolve with time while staying rooted in curiosity and truth.
