Leela Sahu, a 22-year-old content creator from Khaddi Khurd village in Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district, is not just making viral videos; she’s making politicians accountable. Known for her short-form content about rural fairs and farm life, Leela now uses her massive 843K Instagram followers and over 1 million YouTube Subscribers’ following to highlight real problems. Her latest concern is loud and clear: a proper road before more women are forced to ride tractors to deliver babies, for which they have waited for years.

From Travel Vlogs to Public Accountability

Leela began creating content in 2022, capturing the colours of village life. But in 2024, her focus shifted. She started tagging prominent figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and local MP Rajesh Mishra, in posts about her village’s inadequate infrastructure. She didn’t ask for fame; she asked for a road.

What Triggered Her Now?

Leela, currently nine months pregnant, said her family repeatedly approached leaders last year about building a road. Despite a survey, no action followed. “Rains came and went. Then winter. Then summer. Now it’s raining again. Still, no road,” she said in a video that’s been widely shared.

For people in her village, the nearest health centre is 8 km away, and it is often accessible only by tractor over broken paths. “I’m not the only one. Six women in my area are expecting. We risk our lives travelling to the hospital,” she said.

BJP MP’s Comment Sparks Outrage

Responding to her viral video, BJP MP Rajesh Mishra said pregnant women can be taken to hospitals a week early. “Every delivery has a due date. If she wants, she can get admitted early. We’ll provide all facilities,” he said.

This statement drew heavy criticism, prompting a clarification. Mishra claimed the proposal to build the road was submitted in 2024 and had been accepted. “Construction will take 17 months,” he added.

PWD Minister Adds to the Chaos

PWD Minister Rakesh Singh also spoke up, but not helpfully. “Till the time there are roads, there will be potholes,” he said, adding that road quality varies. His comments did little to calm the public backlash.

What Officials Say About the Project

A local officer from Sidhi district stated that a 5-km road plan under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana was submitted in March 2025. “Work will begin once the state approves,” the officer said.

Leela Stands Her Ground

Leela isn’t backing down. “This isn’t just about me. My sister-in-law is pregnant. Six others in our area are too. Why is it so hard to build a basic road in 2025?” she asked. She also said she plans to visit Delhi after delivery and request a meeting with Nitin Gadkari directly.

Facing allegations that she’s chasing political fame, Leela clarified: “I have no interest in politics nor want to be airlifted. I want basic dignity. I want accountability.”

Life Without Roads, Water, or Internet

Leela’s struggle goes beyond the road. Her village lacks running water and a stable internet connection. “To upload a video, I walk 1 km just to catch a signal. You’re all in 2025. We’re still stuck in the 1990s,” she said.

Sidhi’s Digital Daughter Speaks Out

Leela Sahu may not want to enter politics, but her courage is a political act. In a time when rural voices go unheard, she’s calling out leaders on social media, demanding answers: “Why aren’t you doing your job?”
