Samay Raina Controversy: Apology Submitted to NCW Over’ India’s Got Latent’ Remarks
Comedian Samay Raina faces backlash over sexist, ableist remarks on his show India's Got Latent; issues apology to NCW, appears before Supreme Court.
A storm of criticism has been stirred around comedian Samay Raina after remarks made on his YouTube show India’s Got Latent sparked allegations of sexism and ableism. The controversy, which had been simmering for months, was escalated this week when Raina submitted a written apology to the National Commission for Women (NCW) and also appeared before the Supreme Court in a related case.
Raina’s apology had been handed over to the NCW following complaints about derogatory comments made during his show. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar had reminded the comedian of the importance of speaking with respect and sensitivity about women, especially on public platforms. He had been advised to avoid such statements going forward.
His appearance came only after repeated summons had been issued by the Commission, which had originally called for a hearing back in February. That session had been missed by Raina and five other influencers, who had cited travel and security concerns. A revised hearing had been arranged, allowing them time to return to India and appear in person.
The original controversy had been triggered by a specific episode of India’s Got Latent, which featured YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, better known as BeerBiceps. In that episode, Allahbadia had made crude and inappropriate remarks involving parents and sex, sparking immediate public backlash. Outrage had spread across social media, and formal complaints had poured in.

Things took a more serious turn when Raina, along with several others, had also been pulled into a Supreme Court case regarding alleged ableist comments made during the same show. The case was heard by Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, who expressed strong concern over the nature of the remarks. The individuals involved had been asked to submit formal responses to the petition.
In response to growing concerns about online content, Attorney General R. Venkataramani has been instructed to help draft social media guidelines. These new rules are expected to strike a balance between freedom of expression and the protection of others from harmful content.
What began as a segment on a casual YouTube show has now evolved into a national debate about accountability, online behaviour, and the boundaries of comedy. With both legal and social consequences mounting, Raina’s case could mark a turning point in how digital creators are held responsible for their words.
