Threads, the social media platform from Meta, is testing a new feature that allows users to share long-form text directly on the app. Instead of posting multiple updates in a thread, users can now attach a block of text to a single post. This makes it easier for people to share detailed thoughts, news snippets, book excerpts, and more without relying on workarounds like uploading screenshots from the Notes app.

What This Means for Creators

Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that the feature is currently in testing. For writers, bloggers, and creators, the ability to post long-form content directly could become a strong alternative to publishing only on newsletters or blogging platforms such as Substack. This also helps Threads retain creators who prefer to publish detailed content in one go, instead of being restricted by post limits.

Unlike X, which only offers long-form “Articles” for Premium subscribers, Threads’ feature is currently free for all users. However, the accessibility model could evolve in the future.

Comparison With X and Other Platforms

Threads’ long-form option comes at a time when the platform is scaling rapidly. Its competitor X already supports detailed posts with integrated multimedia. At the moment, Threads is focused only on text, but Meta may expand to include images and videos as the feature matures.

Threads’ decision to provide the feature to all users sets it apart from X’s Premium-only approach, making it more creator-friendly for now.

Growth and User Base

In just two years since its launch, Threads has grown to over 400 million monthly active users. Meanwhile, X continues to remain ahead with more than 600 million monthly active users, according to earlier figures shared by its former CEO Linda Yaccarino.

Disrupt 2025: Big Tech Joins the Stage

Alongside this development, TechCrunch announced major names for the Disrupt 2025 event in San Francisco. The 20th anniversary edition will host Netflix, ElevenLabs, Wayve, Sequoia Capital, and Elad Gil, among other top voices from tech and venture capital. The three-day event will be held from October 27 to 29, 2025. Tickets are now open with early bird savings of over $600 available.

Expanding Features on Threads

Long-form text support joins a list of new updates introduced on Threads over the past year. The platform has already rolled out direct messages (DMs), fediverse integrations, custom feeds, AI-powered enhancements, and more. These updates reflect Meta’s larger goal of making Threads a serious competitor in the global social media space.
