“Main Phas Gaya”: How A Banana Order Turned Into A Viral Rant About Coupons

Popular YouTuber and content creator Gaurav Taneja has sparked a conversation online after sharing a hilarious yet relatable experience involving Zomato and Blinkit’s cross-platform coupon offers. In a recent video, Taneja explained how what started as a simple order for bananas eventually turned into a spending spiral that left him questioning whether these discounts are actually helping customers save money.

How did it start?

Taneja revealed that he had injured his back and was struggling to move around properly. While recovering at home, he realized that his daily supply of bananas for his morning oats had run out. Naturally, he opened Blinkit to place a quick order. But like many online shoppers, a few extra items soon found their way into the cart. Before he knew it, the total had reached around ₹ 500. Then came the offer. Blinkit informed him that if he added another ₹331 worth of products, he would receive a ₹200 coupon for Zomato. Thinking it might be useful someday, Taneja increased his cart value to nearly ₹1,000 and completed the purchase. At the time, it felt like a smart deal.

The Coupon That Couldn’t Be Used

The twist came the very next day. Taneja fell sick and was advised complete bed rest. Craving some comfort food, he remembered the ₹200 Zomato coupon he had unlocked through Blinkit. Confident that he was about to save money, he added golgappas and dhokla to his cart. The total came to roughly ₹157. That’s when he discovered the catch. According to Taneja, Zomato informed him that he would need to spend around ₹999 to redeem the ₹200 discount. The creator was visibly surprised. He pointed out that when the coupon was initially promoted, the spending requirement wasn’t obvious enough for customers to immediately understand the actual conditions attached to the offer.

“Are We Saving Money Or Spending More?”

What frustrated Taneja most wasn’t losing the discount. It was the realization that he had already spent significantly more on Blinkit to unlock a coupon that he couldn’t realistically use for the type of order he wanted to place. His experience led him to question whether such promotions genuinely help users save money or subtly encourage them to spend more than they originally planned. The story quickly resonated with viewers, many of whom shared similar experiences of chasing discounts only to discover minimum order requirements, platform conditions, or hidden spending thresholds later.
