Why did Kunal Kamra move his Bengaluru performances?
Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra shifted his four-day Bengaluru comedy tour from the URU venue in Whitefield to the Underground Comedy Club in Koramangala. He made the move after objections were raised by Hindutva groups. The move came amid growing controversy over his scheduled performances. Therefore, organisers relocated the shows instead of risking cancellation.
What sparked the controversy?
The row began after the Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samiti submitted a complaint to the Bengaluru Police seeking cancellation of Kamra’s performances. The group alleged that the comedian had previously made remarks disrespecting Hindu deities. Additionally, the group argued that allowing the shows could create law-and-order issues and affect communal harmony.

How did Kamra respond to the objections?
Rather than remaining silent, Kamra addressed the controversy publicly on social media. He invited those opposing his performances to meet him at the Whitefield Police Station for a discussion on “comedy and culture.” On August 2, he visited the police station and informed officials that he would not perform at the original venue. This decision was made because the issue had become increasingly contentious. Senior journalist Aakar Patel was among those who accompanied him.
Why were the shows shifted to Koramangala?
The performances were relocated to the Underground Comedy Club in Koramangala to ensure the tour could continue. The Whitefield venue clarified that it had only rented out its space and was not organising the event. Meanwhile, government sources indicated there was no immediate plan to prevent the performances at the new venue. Therefore, the scheduled shows were allowed to proceed.

Is the controversy over yet?
The dispute has continued despite the venue change. The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has reportedly urged the police in Koramangala to stop the performances there as well. Meanwhile, Kamra informed ticket holders that bookings for the Whitefield venue would be automatically refunded, as the new venue has limited seating capacity. Fans wishing to attend the rescheduled shows will need to purchase fresh tickets.
