The Story of Foodka, the Creator Who Turned Food Into a Cultural Movement

In an era where food content is often reduced to quick reviews, viral reels and restaurant ratings, Indrajit Lahiri chose a different path. Long before food influencing became a lucrative industry, he was documenting stories hidden behind recipes, exploring forgotten culinary traditions and asking questions that went far beyond taste. Today, the man popularly known as Foodka has emerged as one of India’s most respected regional food creators, taking Bengali food culture from the lanes of Kolkata to international platforms while inspiring an entire generation of food entrepreneurs along the way. His journey is not merely the story of a successful content creator. It is the story of a storyteller, an entrepreneur, an author and a cultural ambassador who transformed a passion for food into a movement that celebrates Bengali heritage, identity and community.

A Foundation Built Beyond Food

Interestingly, Indrajit’s journey into the food world did not begin in a professional kitchen or a media house. Armed with a degree in Hospitality Management from IHM Bhubaneswar and an Economics Honours degree from the University of Calcutta, he initially built a successful career in the corporate sector. For more than a decade, he worked across industries before establishing his own technology venture, Pickle Solutions Pvt. Ltd., specialising in IT and hardware rollout solutions.

While professionally successful, Lahiri’s interests stretched far beyond boardrooms and business meetings. Food had always fascinated him, not simply as something people consumed but as a reflection of culture, geography, economics, migration and memory. He found himself increasingly drawn towards the stories that existed around food rather than the food itself. Why do certain dishes survive generations? How does migration influence local cuisine? What do eating habits reveal about communities? These questions would eventually shape the foundation of everything he would later build.

When you entered the food content space, what did you feel was missing from the conversation, and what did you want to bring differently?

What was missing, ironically, was the food story itself. There were conversations around restaurants, personalities and experiences, but not enough attention was being paid to the people, traditions and histories behind what we eat. Foodka was born out of that curiosity, to tell the stories behind the food, not just what’s on the plate. We wanted to document the forgotten eateries, family recipes, local legends and cultural memories that often don’t make it into mainstream conversations, but are just as important to our understanding of food.

The Birth of Foodka

In 2017, Indrajit co-founded Foodka , a Bengali food storytelling platform built on a simple yet powerful belief: food is the greatest equaliser. While most food blogs focused on restaurant recommendations and reviews, Foodka approached food through a completely different lens. It explored the people behind recipes, the forgotten origins of dishes, and the cultural significance hidden in everyday meals.

The timing was significant. Regional food content was still finding its place in India’s digital ecosystem, and Bengali food remained largely underrepresented despite its rich culinary heritage. Foodka stepped into that gap with a fresh perspective, combining research, storytelling, travel, history, and visual documentation.

What started as a passion project quickly grew into one of Bengal’s most trusted food platforms. Audiences connected with the authenticity of the storytelling and the depth of research behind every episode. Rather than merely showing what was on a plate, Foodka explained why it mattered.

Turning Food Into Cultural Documentation

Over the years, Foodka evolved into much more than a food channel. It became a living archive of culinary heritage. Through hundreds of videos, articles, podcasts, and social media stories, Lahiri documented traditions that were slowly disappearing and communities whose stories often remained untold.

His explorations took him across Bengal’s towns and villages, from Joynagar and Krishnanagar to Chandannagar and Mayapur. He traced the evolution of Kolkata through food, explored the origins of traditional sweets, documented fishing communities, and uncovered culinary histories that connected generations.

As his work expanded, so did his geographical footprint. Foodka’s storytelling journey eventually moved beyond Bengal to cover culinary cultures across Telangana, Odisha, Maharashtra, Goa, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Vietnam. Through every journey, Lahiri reinforced one central idea: food is not merely sustenance; it is one of the most powerful ways to understand people and societies.

Becoming One of India’s Leading Regional Food Creators

What sets Indrajit Lahiri apart from many creators is the credibility he has built over time. His influence extends beyond follower counts and video views. Today, Foodka is widely regarded as one of India’s most respected regional food content brands, known for combining storytelling with substance.

His work has earned recognition from some of the country’s most prestigious institutions. He has served as a jury member for the NDTV Food Awards, Telegraph Food Awards, Conde Nast Traveller India’s Top Food Awards, FoodFood Awards, and several other industry platforms. These appointments reflect not only his expertise but also the trust he commands within India’s food and hospitality ecosystem.

His influence has also crossed into academia. A dedicated research paper examining his impact on food culture, consumer behaviour, and influencer communication was published by De Gruyter Mouton, making him one of the few food creators whose work has become a subject of academic study.

What impact do you want Foodka to leave behind?

If Foodka leaves behind anything, I hope it’s a stronger ecosystem for food storytelling. Every food has a story, and those stories deserve to be documented, preserved and taken seriously, not just as content, but as a part of our cultural memory. If Foodka can preserve regional culinary narratives, help food entrepreneurs grow, and inspire people to see food as a part of heritage rather than just consumption, then I think we would have created something much larger than a media platform

Author, Speaker and Cultural Thought Leader

While many know him as Foodka, Lahiri’s contribution extends far beyond digital content. He is also a published author with three Bengali books dedicated to food and culture: Foodkahini, Aro Foodkahini, and Akhondo Foodkahini. Through these works, he has preserved countless stories that might otherwise have disappeared from public memory.

His award-winning blog, Moha Mushkil, further established him as a thoughtful chronicler of culinary culture. With hundreds of articles exploring food history and cultural narratives, the platform became a valuable resource for food enthusiasts and researchers alike.

Beyond writing, Lahiri has emerged as a sought-after public speaker. From TEDx and Josh Talks to literary festivals, university masterclasses, and industry conferences, he regularly speaks about food, storytelling, entrepreneurship, and the changing landscape of digital influence.

Taking Bengali Food Culture to the World

One of the most significant chapters of Indrajit Lahiri’s journey is now unfolding on the global stage. As Bengali communities across the world seek stronger connections to their cultural roots, voices like his have become increasingly important in preserving and promoting Bengal’s rich culinary heritage. This growing influence has led to his selection as a panellist and jury member at London Mahotsav 2026, one of the United Kingdom’s largest celebrations of Bengali culture.

Bringing together leading artists, entrepreneurs, writers, performers, and cultural ambassadors from across the world, the festival serves as a platform for meaningful conversations around Bengal’s evolving identity and global influence. Lahiri’s presence as a speaker and judge reflects the recognition he has earned as one of the foremost voices documenting and interpreting Bengali food culture today.

For someone who began by telling stories about local eateries, forgotten recipes, and culinary traditions, the opportunity to contribute to global discussions around Bengali heritage marks a significant milestone. It is also a reflection of how Foodka has evolved from a regional food platform into an influential cultural voice. Through his work, Lahiri continues to challenge the perception of Bengali cuisine as merely a regional culinary tradition, positioning it instead as a powerful expression of history, identity, and culture that deserves international recognition.

Building Businesses and Creating Opportunities

Even as Foodka continued to grow, Lahiri recognised a larger opportunity. He understood that India’s food industry needed more than content creators; it needed mentors, educators, and ecosystem builders.

This vision led to the creation of Foodka Consulting, Foodka Academy, and Foodka Studio, alongside his role as Co-founder and Brand Strategist of Eastern Staple, an emerging institutional food solutions company.

Through these ventures, he works closely with restaurants, cloud kitchens, food startups, and aspiring entrepreneurs, helping them build sustainable businesses through branding, storytelling, and strategic growth.

Unlike many influencers who focus exclusively on personal growth, Lahiri has invested heavily in helping others succeed.

Empowering the Next Generation of Food Entrepreneurs

One of Indrajit Lahiri’s most impactful contributions is mentoring aspiring chefs and food entrepreneurs. Through training programmes and mentorship initiatives, he helps them build skills and grow sustainable food businesses.

His cloud kitchen growth programme, designed specifically for home chefs and working professionals, has become particularly popular. The programme provides practical guidance on launching and scaling food businesses with minimal investment, helping participants acquire customers, build strong brands, optimise menus, and establish profitable operations.

For many aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those who cannot afford to leave their jobs immediately, the programme offers a realistic roadmap to turning culinary passion into a sustainable source of income.

This focus on community building reflects a philosophy that has remained central to Foodka’s growth: success becomes meaningful when it creates opportunities for others.

More Than an Influencer

To describe Indrajit Lahiri simply as a food influencer would be to miss the larger picture.

He preserves Bengal’s culinary heritage through storytelling and documentation. He also builds food businesses and mentors aspiring chefs. As an author and storyteller, he uses food to connect people, places, and cultures.

His journey has taken him from the streets of Kolkata to international stages in London and beyond. He continues to showcase Bengali food and culture to global audiences. His mission remains unchanged: preserve Bengal’s culinary heritage and share its stories with the world.

In doing so, Indrajit Lahiri has transformed Foodka from a content platform into a cultural movement, one that continues to carry Bengal’s stories, traditions, and tastes to audiences across the world.
