OpenAI is bringing advertisements to ChatGPT in India. The ads will initially appear for users on the Free and Go plans, giving advertisers access to one of India’s fastest-growing AI audiences. The move marks an important shift for ChatGPT. For years, the chatbot’s business model largely centred on subscriptions and enterprise customers. Advertising now gives OpenAI another route to monetise its enormous free-user base.

Why India Matters

OpenAI said in February that ChatGPT had more than 100 million weekly active users in India. The country has also become a particularly important market among younger users. OpenAI previously said people aged 18 to 24 accounted for nearly half of ChatGPT messages in India. That makes India attractive to advertisers. It also explains why OpenAI has invested heavily in the market, including its low-cost ChatGPT Go plan and partnerships across education, technology and consumer services.

50 Brands Will Start the Programme

OpenAI will initially work with 50 brands in India. The company has partnered with advertising giants WPP and Omnicom for the launch.

It also plans to introduce an Ads Manager, allowing businesses to create campaigns directly. The initial daily campaign budget will start at Rs 725. This could make ChatGPT advertising accessible beyond only India’s largest advertisers.

What Will ChatGPT Ads Look Like?

OpenAI says advertisements will remain separate from ChatGPT’s answers. The company says ads will not influence the responses users receive. OpenAI also says advertisers cannot access users’ conversations, chat history, memories or personal information. Instead, ads can be matched with the topic of a conversation. That creates an interesting difference from traditional advertising. A user researching cameras, planning a holiday or comparing products could encounter advertising related to that intent. The opportunity for advertisers is therefore less about broad demographics and more about context and timing.

But Does Advertising Change ChatGPT?

This is where the bigger question begins. Search engines have displayed ads for years. Social platforms have built entire businesses around targeted advertising. ChatGPT is different because users often turn to it while making decisions, researching products or asking for recommendations. That gives advertisements potentially greater commercial relevance. It also makes the separation between an answer and an advertisement especially important. OpenAI says sponsored content will be clearly labelled and visually separated from organic answers.

Why OpenAI Needs Another Revenue Stream

Running frontier AI systems is expensive. OpenAI has been investing heavily in computing infrastructure while competing with Google, Anthropic, Meta and other AI companies. Advertising gives the company a way to generate revenue from users who do not pay for subscriptions. The strategy is already being tested elsewhere. OpenAI began testing ads in the US in February and has since expanded its advertising programme to additional markets. Sensor Tower data cited by TechCrunch suggests ads were already reaching a growing share of ChatGPT’s US users by May.

The Bigger Shift: AI Is Becoming an Advertising Platform

The development could have consequences beyond OpenAI. If users increasingly rely on AI assistants to discover products, compare options and make decisions, advertising could follow them into these conversations. That could create an entirely new advertising category. Instead of asking Google and then clicking an advertisement, consumers could increasingly ask an AI assistant directly. For brands, appearing at that moment could become valuable. For users, however, the central question remains trust.

Can an AI assistant remain useful when advertisers are paying to appear inside the experience?

OpenAI says its answers will remain independent. How consumers respond once ads become a regular part of ChatGPT will be the more important test.
