A Viral Auto Ride Introduced The Internet To A Man Who Has Been Inspiring People For Years

A Chennai auto driver recently went viral after an Instagram user @the_dharani_theory shared her unusual experience travelling in his auto in Sholinganallur. What seemed like an ordinary ride quickly surprised thousands online. The vehicle offered newspapers, magazines, UPSC study materials, free Wi-Fi, iPads, chocolates, umbrellas, coffee, a mini cooler, and even free rides for doctors, teachers, nurses, and sanitation workers. Passengers soon discovered that Annadurai was not just an auto driver. He was also a 7-time TEDx speaker, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, corporate trainer, and one of India’s most admired customer service icons. Ironically, despite years of recognition and public speaking, many people only discovered him through this viral reel. Nevertheless, he had quietly spent years transforming lives one auto ride at a time without seeking fame.

What is Annadurai’s story?

Annadurai‘s story began far away from conference stages and viral social media posts. Born in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district, he moved to Chennai when he was just four years old. Coming from a family of auto drivers, financial difficulties forced him to leave school after Class 12 and start working to support his family.

Like thousands of others, he could have simply driven passengers from one destination to another. Instead, he decided to do something different. Rather than seeing his profession as a limitation, Annadurai asked himself a simple question: How can I make a ten-minute auto ride unforgettable?

That question changed his life.

What Makes Annadurai’s Auto So Different?

Over the years, Annadurai equipped his vehicle with amenities rarely found even in premium transport services. Passengers were offered free newspapers, magazines, Wi-Fi access, tablets, laptops, television screens, mobile charging facilities, and even digital payment options long before they became commonplace. He later introduced debit and credit card payment facilities. This made transactions easier for customers.

His philosophy was simple: treat every passenger like a guest. Inspired by the Indian principle of “Athithi Devo Bhava” (The Guest Is God), Annadurai focused relentlessly on customer delight rather than customer satisfaction.

Through his “Token Treat” initiative, he regularly shared a portion of his earnings with passengers through loyalty contests and rewards. He also became known for offering complimentary rides to doctors, teachers, nurses, and sanitation workers on special occasions. This was a gesture of gratitude.

From Auto Driver To Corporate Trainer and TEDx Speaker

Annadurai was invited to deliver TEDx talks across multiple platforms, eventually becoming a seven-time TEDx speaker. His speeches focused on customer retention, passion for work, innovation, and finding excellence in everyday professions. As his reputation grew, Annadurai’s audience expanded far beyond passengers. Major companies including Microsoft, Infosys, Vodafone, Hyundai, Google, and several educational institutions invited him to speak to employees, students, and business leaders.

The former auto driver began travelling across cities such as Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Gurgaon, sharing lessons on customer experience and professional excellence. Today, he is widely recognised as a corporate trainer and motivational speaker. He teaches organisations how meaningful service can create lasting impact.

Recognition And Awards

Annadurai’s contributions have earned him numerous accolades over the years. Among them is the prestigious “Yesterday Award” presented by the Government of Tamil Nadu in recognition of his inspiring contributions to society. Yet despite national recognition, corporate speaking engagements, and TEDx appearances, Annadurai has continued driving his auto and interacting with passengers every day. That humility remains one of the most admired aspects of his story.
