In July 2025, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the state Assembly that the Centre needed stronger rules to tackle online gaming addiction and its impact on young people. The concern largely centred on games involving money, gambling-like mechanics and financial losses.

Yes. India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games at the national level. The central legislation provides strict penalties. Offering or facilitating prohibited online money gaming can result in imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to ₹1 crore, or both. Repeat offences can attract imprisonment of three to five years along with higher financial penalties. Advertising and facilitating prohibited games are also covered.

Does India’s framework focus only on banning games?

No. The 2026 regulatory framework also introduces safeguards around online gaming, including measures relating to age, parental controls, addiction, psychological harm, financial loss, fraud, prolonged gaming sessions and user-defined time or spending limits.

So, should all online games be banned?

The strongest answer is no. Casual gaming, e-sports and online money gaming are fundamentally different activities. A blanket ban could affect legitimate players, professional e-sports and gaming businesses while failing to specifically address the highest-risk activities.

What should stronger gaming regulation focus on?

A more targeted approach could include strict age verification, parental controls, spending and time limits, self-exclusion tools, addiction warnings, tighter advertising rules, restrictions on misleading endorsements, transparent game rules and stronger action against illegal offshore platforms.
