Social Media Post of Neha Singh Rathore Triggers Police Case After Pahalgam Attack

A social media post by Neha Singh Rathore has landed her in legal trouble after police registered a case against her for allegedly promoting communal disharmony and threatening national unity. The post, shared from her handle @nehafolksinger on X, came in the sensitive aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives last week.

Neha Singh Rathore Booked for Communal Remarks After Pahalgam Attack

According to Abhay Pratap Singh’s complaint, Rathore’s post contained remarks that targeted a particular community and could have inflamed religious tensions at a time when the entire country was grieving. Singh alleged that the nature of her comments had the potential to disturb public peace and endanger the nation’s integrity.

Following the complaint, police at Hazratganj station in Lucknow booked Rathore under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including promoting sectarian animosity, disturbing public tranquillity, and endangering sovereignty, unity, and integrity. Relevant charges under the Information Technology Act were also added, officials confirmed.

Charges Filed Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and IT Act

While the new BNS framework does not specifically mention “sedition”—previously covered under Section 124-A of the Indian Penal Code—it addresses similar threats to national unity under Section 152. Authorities said Rathore’s post was flagged for content that could provoke divisions at a time when emotions were already running high across the country.

Police Investigation Highlights Sensitivity of Social Media Posts During Tragedies

The police have investigated the matter; further action will depend on the findings. The incident once again highlights how quickly a social media post—especially during times of national tragedy—can escalate into a serious legal issue.
