Samay Raina is in Trouble Again as SC Slams His Joke on Disability and Rare Disease
SC raises a red flag as comedian Samay Raina’s joke on disability and rare diseases crosses a line sparking legal trouble and public outrage.

Comedian Samay Raina is facing fresh trouble after the Supreme Court took serious note of his controversial remarks about individuals with disabilities on his roast-style show India’s Got Latent. The court expressed strong concern over the jokes, which included comments about a visually impaired person and a child suffering from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a rare and life-threatening genetic condition.
Supreme Court ‘Disturbed’ by Joke Targeting Rare Disease
In a recent hearing, the bench, led by Justice Surya Kant, said they were “really disturbed” by the content in question. The remarks were highlighted in a petition by the Cure SMA Foundation of India, which not only flagged the specific joke but also urged the court to take a broader look at the insensitivity around rare diseases and the issue of unaffordable treatments.

For context, in one segment of the show, Samay Raina spoke about a case involving a two-month-old baby who needed an INR 16 crore injection. What was meant to be a dark joke quickly spiralled into controversy when he turned to a woman in the audience and said something like, “Ma’am, if INR 16 crore suddenly appeared in your bank account, and you had a two-month-old child… wouldn’t you at least give your husband one look and say—‘Hmmm… inflation is rising’?”
Cure SMA Foundation Steps In, Samay Raina Now a Legal Party
The joke didn’t land the way Raina might have intended. It sparked outrage online, especially among rare disease advocacy groups and parents of children with serious health conditions. The Cure SMA Foundation filed a formal petition, and now, Raina has officially been impleaded in the case—meaning he’s been made a party to the ongoing legal proceedings that began after co-star Ranveer Allahbadia’s controversial segment.
Creative Freedom vs Human Dignity: Where’s the Line?
The Supreme Court’s response highlights the growing tension between creative freedom and social responsibility in the age of viral content. With backlash mounting and legal pressure increasing, this controversy may be the tipping point for how far comedy can go, especially at the cost of human dignity.
