Instagram Introduces 'Edits': A Free Video Editing App for Creators

Instagram’s Edits app is a one-stop solution for creators who want a clean, professional, and flexible video editing tool. Edits is a strong move by Instagram to support its creator community. This app is designed especially for content creators who want to plan, shoot, edit, and manage videos in one place. It’s available for free on both Android and iOS devices.

The launch comes after months of previews and was first announced by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri in January. Mosseri introduced Edits as a tool meant more for creators than casual users, calling it a direct competitor to CapCut, a video editor developed by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance.

Why ‘Edits’ is a Game-Changer for Video Creators?

Instagram understands that creating videos often means switching between multiple apps. With Edits, the goal is to simplify this process by offering everything in one app.

Here’s what Edits offer from the start:

  • Multi-channel editing: Creators can edit multiple video streams on a timeline.
  • Project management: Users can manage several projects under a dedicated “Projects” tab.
  • Notes section: A space to jot down video ideas and save notes for future content.
  • Reels trend search: Find trending audio and Reels within the app itself.

Long-Form Videos and Smart AI Tools

Edits allow creators to shoot clips up to 10 minutes long, a big upgrade from the current 3-minute recording limit within the Instagram app. It also brings new smart tools powered by AI:

  • Green screen effects and cutouts to isolate people or objects
  • Animation for still images, turning static photos into moving visuals
  • Automatic captions
  • Background replacement using AI

Export Without Watermark and Platform Freedom

One of the most attractive features is exporting videos without a watermark. These videos can be posted on Instagram, Facebook, or other platforms, allowing creators to use their content anywhere. Edits also supports adding royalty-free music and captions, and offers content analytics so users can track their videos’ performance.

What’s Coming Next in Edits?

Instagram has promised that more tools and features will roll out soon:

  • Keyframe editing to fine-tune specific parts of videos
  • Advanced AI settings to change entire video backgrounds
  • Collaboration tools for co-creating content
  • New fonts, text animations, voice effects, transitions, filters, and sound effects

These new tools are expected to appear on Edits before they’re possibly added to the main Instagram app.

Will Edits Stay Free?

While Edits is currently free to use, Mosseri hinted that some advanced AI features might become paid in the future due to the high cost of AI technology. However, the plan is to keep most features free for now. All users can log in to Edits using their Instagram account and start creating right away.
