How Niranjan Mondal Is Turning Bengali Reels into Mainstream Storytelling

India’s creator economy is full of faces that turn viral overnight. But only a few manage to build an aesthetic deeply rooted in culture.  Bengali creator Niranjan Mondal, going by his online persona  ‘Laughtersane’, is one such name. Over the past few years, Mondal has built a massive following with relatable sketches, quirky characters and observational humour drawn from everyday Bengali households. Today, with over 1.2 million followers on Instagram, he is among the most recognisable regional comedy creators in India’s digital space. But for Mondal, the journey never started with the intention of building a brand. Long before the handle “Laughtersane” became familiar across timelines, he described himself as someone who simply observed life more closely than most.

Mondal, in a recent interview, reflected on the transformation between the person he once was and the creator audiences know today.

The Reel That Changed Everything

Like many creators, Mondal began by experimenting with short-form content without knowing where it might lead. But one particular moment made him realise that content creation could become something bigger than a hobby.

A video centred around the character Babesh became the turning point. The response to that reel made him recognise the scale of digital audiences and the possibilities of storytelling through short videos.

Despite the unpredictable nature of online success, Mondal insists he never seriously considered quitting. Even on difficult days, he believed the path had to work out because he had already committed fully to it.

For him, there was never a backup plan.

Mita Aunty: The Character That Opened Doors

If there is one character that helped push Niranjan Mondal into the spotlight, it was Mita Aunty, the Internet’s own agony aunt, who does not know how to mind her own business and is quick to offer advice that few are willing to take. She showcases a kind of love adults once had as children, pushy but endearing, the one that feels like a warm hug on a cold winter’s day.

Mita Aunty is a blend of the personalities Mondal encountered over the years.

That relatability is exactly why the character connected with audiences across regions. Yet, the success of Meeta did not inhibit Mondal creatively. For him, it was a character that opened the doors to bolder content creation, nuanced storytelling, and newer formats.

Comedy may be the foundation of his content, but he sees himself as a storyteller capable of evolving beyond a single character.

When Instagram Creators Enter OTT

The boundaries of the creator economy are now blurring with mainstream entertainment, and Niranjan Mondal is spearheading that shift.

Mondal’s claim to fame? Acting in the  Bengali psychological thriller series Birangana on the streaming platform Hoichoi, which premiered in July 2025.

In the series, Mondal plays Chirayu Talukdar, a layered character in a storyline revolving around a serial killer targeting newly married women in Kolkata while a determined police officer investigates the case.

For Mondal, the role was both exciting and intimidating. Unlike short reels, where he controls the entire process, OTT acting demanded deeper preparation and responsibility.

He explained that playing Chirayu carried emotional weight because the character was complex and far from straightforward.

The reception from audiences reassured him that stepping into long-form storytelling was worth the risk.

Reels vs OTT: Two Completely Different Worlds

Mondal often compares digital content creation and OTT acting through a simple analogy.

Creating a reel on a smartphone, he says, is like cooking Maggi at 2 a.m. It is quick, personal and instinctive. You rely on your timing, your front camera and the algorithm.

OTT production, however, feels like working in a five-star kitchen. Lights, cameras, sound engineers, retakes and an entire crew’s collaboration to bring the performance together.

On social media, creators perform for an invisible algorithm and an instant feedback loop. On OTT platforms, the audience is unseen, and the storytelling must sustain attention across entire episodes rather than a 30-second punchline.

Stepping Into Darker Storytelling with Mecho

While comedy remains his strongest identity, Mondal has also experimented with thrillers. One of the most notable examples is the horror-themed project Mecho, where he moved away from lighthearted sketches into psychological suspense.

The project allowed him to explore emotions that comedy often hides.

According to Mondal, darker narratives reveal truths about people that humour sometimes dismisses . Entering that space felt uncomfortable at first, but also creatively liberating.

His interest in layered storytelling reflects a broader shift in the creator ecosystem, where many digital personalities are experimenting with long-form narratives and genre-driven content.

The Regional Language Debate

One of the most persistent myths in the creator economy is that content in regional languages cannot scale nationally.

Mondal strongly disagrees.

He believes creativity has no language barrier and that audiences are willing to watch with subtitles if the storytelling resonates. For him, using Bengali is not a limitation but a representation of identity and culture.

He also emphasises authenticity when working with brands or collaborations. If a campaign brief does not allow him to remain recognisably himself, he prefers to politely decline rather than compromise the tone his audience connects with.

Comedy Without Punching Down

Humour on the internet lies in a fudgy spot between satire and offence. Mondal says he consciously avoids jokes that target people’s identity, accent or personal circumstances.

Instead, his guiding principle is simple: the joke should be shared with the audience, not directed at them.

If a script crosses into a grey area, he rewrites it.

He believes inclusivity should not be treated as a marketing badge but as a normal part of storytelling, especially in a digital environment where audiences are increasingly vocal about accountability.

A Creator’s Brain Never Switches Off

One thing followers rarely see is how constant the creative process actually is.

Mondal describes content creation as a 24×7 mental process rather than a typical job schedule. Ideas appear in random moments, from casual conversations to visceral behavioural details.

He often summarises his approach with a phrase that has become associated with his persona: everything can become content if you observe closely enough.

That mindset explains why his sketches often feel strikingly familiar to viewers. They recognise their own families, neighbourhoods or awkward conversations within his characters.

Do Digital Creators Still Need to “Prove” Themselves?

As social media personalities increasingly enter films and streaming platforms, debates often arise about whether they deserve those opportunities.

Mondal sees the discussion as unnecessary.

In his view, talent ultimately determines longevity. If someone is genuinely good at what they do, opportunities will follow regardless of where they started.

That perspective reflects the larger transformation happening in India’s entertainment ecosystem, where creators are no longer limited to social media alone.

The Rise and Next Chapter of Laughtersane: A Creator Who Refused  ‘Plan B’

For Mondal, the journey ahead is not about choosing between comedy, OTT or storytelling formats. It is about expanding creatively.

He describes the future of his career in simple terms: more creativity, more uniqueness and a constant push toward better storytelling.

From viral reels to web series roles and experimental narrative projects, Niranjan Mondal represents a generation of creators who are reshaping how Indian entertainment evolves online. And if his trajectory so far is any indication, the line between content creator and mainstream actor may soon disappear entirely.
