Facebook Rolls Out New Tools to Combat Impersonation and Protect Creators

Meta has announced a new set of tools designed to make it easier for creators to report impersonation and protect their original content on Facebook. The update comes amid growing criticism that the platform has become overwhelmed with low-quality posts and AI-generated content.

The announcement signals Meta’s renewed effort to restore Facebook’s reputation as a serious platform for creators, especially at a time when short-form video and creator-driven ecosystems dominate social media.

By introducing improved reporting tools and clearer definitions of what counts as original content, Meta hopes to reduce the spread of impersonator accounts and recycled posts that dilute authentic creator work.

The Growing Problem of AI Slop and Content Copying

Over the past few years, creators have increasingly complained that Facebook’s feed has been flooded with recycled videos, spam content, and AI-generated posts, often referred to online as “AI slop.”

These posts frequently involve re-uploaded videos or lightly modified content originally created by someone else.

For creators who rely on the platform for audience growth and monetisation, this trend has created a serious challenge. When copied or low-quality content dominates feeds, original creators struggle to gain visibility or maintain engagement.

Meta acknowledges that addressing this issue is critical to Facebook’s long-term success as a creator platform.

If creators feel their work is constantly copied or overshadowed by low-quality reposts, they may eventually migrate to other platforms where originality is better protected.

Facebook’s Earlier Crackdown on Unoriginal Content

Meta had already begun addressing this issue in 2025.

Last year, the company launched a crackdown targeting spammy and unoriginal content, including posts that repeatedly reused another creator’s photos, videos or written material.

The goal was to improve the quality of content appearing in users’ feeds by promoting original posts while limiting the reach of copied material.

According to Meta, those early efforts have already shown measurable results.

The company reported that views and watch time for original content on Facebook nearly doubled during the second half of 2025, compared with the same period in 2024.

This growth suggests that prioritising authentic content may have helped creators regain visibility on the platform.

Millions of Impersonator Accounts Removed

Impersonation has also been a major concern for creators.

Many influencers and digital personalities have reported encountering accounts that copy their names, profile images or videos to mislead followers.

Meta revealed that 20 million impersonator accounts were removed from Facebook last year alone.

The company also said reports related to impersonation targeting major creators dropped by 33 percent, indicating some progress in identifying and removing fake accounts.

However, creators have continued asking for more efficient ways to report these violations.

A New Dashboard for Content Protection

To address those concerns, Facebook is now testing enhanced content protection tools.

These tools allow creators to track instances where their reels appear elsewhere on the platform after being reposted by impersonators.

From a central dashboard, creators can quickly flag suspicious posts and request action against accounts that copy their content.

The upcoming update will make the reporting process even simpler by allowing creators to submit multiple reports through a single interface, reducing the time required to handle impersonation issues.

A Key Limitation of the Current System

While the new system helps identify duplicate content, it still has limitations.

The technology currently focuses on detecting reposted videos or duplicate content, rather than identifying situations where someone misuses a creator’s likeness.

For example, if an impersonator copies a creator’s profile identity or image but posts different content, the system may not automatically detect the violation.

Meta acknowledges that detecting unauthorised use of a person’s likeness remains a complex challenge that still needs improvement.

A Wider Industry Problem

Facebook is not alone in dealing with the consequences of rapid AI adoption.

Across the social media industry, companies are struggling to control the spread of deepfakes, synthetic media and automated content.

Earlier this week, YouTube announced plans to expand its AI deepfake detection tools, particularly for politicians, journalists and public figures.

The move reflects growing pressure on technology platforms to ensure AI-generated media does not undermine trust or authenticity online.

New Guidelines Defining “Original Content”

Alongside the new reporting tools, Meta has also updated Facebook’s content guidelines to clarify what the company considers original work.

According to the updated policy, original content includes:

  • videos or images filmed directly by the creator
  • content produced specifically by the creator
  • posts that remix existing content with meaningful additions such as analysis, commentary or new information

This means creators who add context or creative transformation to existing material can still be recognised for originality.

What Facebook Will Now Deprioritise

At the same time, Meta says it will deprioritise content that offers little creative value.

Examples of unoriginal content include:

  • simple reposts of someone else’s work
  • videos that only add borders, watermarks or captions without meaningful changes
  • minor edits that do not significantly transform the original content

Such posts will be pushed lower in the platform’s recommendation systems, making it harder for them to gain visibility.

Why These Changes Matter for Creators

For many digital creators, the biggest challenge on social media today is not creating content but protecting it.

As tools powered by AI make it easier to copy, remix or re-upload videos, platforms are under increasing pressure to defend originality.

Meta’s latest updates suggest that Facebook wants to position itself as a platform where creators can build sustainable audiences without worrying about widespread content theft.
