What Actually Drives Reels' Engagement? New Data Reveals What Works in 2026

Why Are Reels Still Dominating Social Media Engagement?

Short-form video continues to lead the content game across Instagram and Facebook, with Reels becoming the primary driver of engagement, reach, and time spent on platforms. Reports suggest that users are sharing over 3.5 billion Reels daily, and nearly 50 percent of all time spent on Instagram is dedicated to consuming Reels. For creators and brands, this shift means one thing: understanding what works on Reels is no longer optional; it is essential.

What Does New Data Say About Reels’ Performance?

A recent study by Emplifi analysed 10,110 Facebook Reels across 704 brand pages to decode what actually improves engagement.

The findings go beyond assumptions and clearly highlight patterns that creators can apply directly to their content strategy.

Does Human Speech Really Improve Reels Engagement?

Yes, and quite significantly.

According to the data, videos that include human speech within the first three seconds perform better than those relying only on music. In fact, retention for 10-second views increases by nearly 25 percent when speech is introduced early.

Speech-based videos also recorded a 5.6 percent higher engagement rate compared to music-only content. Additionally, users are more likely to watch videos with sound on when there is a human voice involved.

This shows that talking to your audience still works better than just playing trending audio.

How Important Is Showing a Human Face in Reels?

The presence of a person, even briefly, makes a measurable difference.

If a human face appears within the first three seconds of a Reel, retention improves by around 10 percent for short-duration views. This early connection seems to help viewers stay longer.

However, over longer durations like 30 seconds, there is a slight drop of 2.4 percent in retention for videos with human presence. Still, the early impact is strong enough to influence overall performance.

For creators, this means getting on camera quickly matters.

Do Shorter Videos and Looping Increase Engagement?

Absolutely.

For micro-content, especially videos under 7 seconds, seamless looping plays a major role in boosting performance. Emplifi found that:

Replay rates increased by 18.7 percent

Engagement rates rose by 16.1 percent

Looping creates a natural repeat effect, making viewers watch the content again without realising it.

Do Text Overlays Help or Hurt Reels Performance?

Text overlays offer a slight advantage.

While they do not create a massive spike, they contribute to “modest improvements” in engagement. This is especially useful for adding context, punchlines, or key information without relying entirely on audio.

Does Video Format Still Matter in 2026?

Yes, format continues to play a crucial role.

Vertical videos outperform other formats by a significant margin, with a 20.9 percent higher reach. This aligns with mobile-first consumption habits, where users prefer full-screen, immersive content.
