Speaking at Myntra Creator School, creator, actor, and filmmaker Dolly Singh revealed that her journey to becoming one of only 25 global recipients of Instagram’s inaugural Rings Award in 2025 began when she stopped chasing trends and audience expectations. Reflecting on her decade-long creator journey, Singh shared that she had experienced periods of burnout, self-doubt, and creative exhaustion after constantly trying to recreate content formats that people expected from her. According to Singh, the turning point came when she decided to focus on creating content she genuinely enjoyed rather than attempting to please everyone. She credited advice inspired by author Kurt Vonnegut, shared by her boyfriend, for helping her embrace authenticity and rediscover her creative direction, a mindset shift she believes ultimately played a key role in her global recognition by Instagram. 

What Advice Helped Change Her Perspective?

Dolly Singh credited a conversation with her boyfriend for helping her rediscover her creative direction. She recalled him sharing advice inspired by author Kurt Vonnegut, who suggested that artists should create for one person rather than trying to satisfy everyone.

“Always do your art for one person, whether it’s your mother, your sister, your brother, yourself, anybody. But you can’t please everybody.”

The idea encouraged Singh to stop chasing expectations and focus on creating content she genuinely enjoyed.

“I felt that I’m just going to do what I’m going to enjoy. I’m just going to forget what people expect of me right now, and I just want to create what I want to create.”

According to Singh, that shift in mindset eventually became one of the most important turning points in her career.

How Did Dolly Singh Build Her Career?

Long before global recognition, Singh’s journey began in Nainital, where she developed a love for performing and storytelling. After studying at Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College and later pursuing fashion studies at NIFT, she started experimenting with fashion blogging and digital content.

Her breakthrough came through relatable characters such as Raju Ki Mummy and South Delhi Girl, which quickly became popular across social media platforms. What started as short-form comedy content eventually expanded into acting, filmmaking, production, and entrepreneurship.

Over the years, Singh appeared in films including Double XL and Thank You For Coming while also launching her own production house, Dollywood Filums. Through projects such as Covid Love Story and Best Worst Date, she began creating and producing stories beyond traditional creator content. The Instagram Rings Award marked another milestone in that evolution, recognising her contribution to storytelling, creativity, and cultural impact on a global stage.

Dolly Singh shared these insights during the launch of Myntra Creator School, a new initiative designed to support creators through learning, networking, and collaboration opportunities. The launch event brought together more than 250 creators and featured workshops led by teams from YouTube, Meta, and Snapchat. The programme also included fireside chats with personalities such as Malaika Arora, Parul Gulati, Dolly Singh, and Archana Puran Singh.

Positioned as a creator-first platform, Myntra Creator School aims to help emerging and established creators gain industry insights, develop new skills, and navigate the evolving digital content ecosystem. For many attendees, however, one of the biggest takeaways came from Dolly Singh’s reminder that sometimes growth begins when creators stop trying to please everyone and start creating for themselves.
