Instagram Tightens Rules on Meta Glasses Videos That Invade Privacy

Instagram is tightening its rules around content filmed using Meta smart glasses. The platform announced that it will remove videos that harass, exploit, or secretly record people without their consent. The move comes as first-person (POV) videos featuring strangers in public have become increasingly common across social media.

Why Is Instagram Taking Action?

The decision follows a surge in videos where creators use Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses to film unsuspecting people in locations such as beaches, gyms, shopping malls, and busy streets. Many of these clips feature prank or “pickup” interactions. These are recorded from the wearer’s perspective, often without the knowledge of the people being filmed.

Instagram says this type of content crosses the line when it invades privacy or targets individuals for harassment.

What Did Instagram Say?

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the platform will remove content that exploits or harasses people. In particular, videos that secretly record individuals for viral engagement will also be removed.

According to Mosseri, Instagram does not want users filming others without their knowledge and then uploading those interactions to the platform for entertainment. Additionally, the company says it will continue strengthening its efforts to discourage this behaviour.

Accounts Already Affected

Reports suggest that at least two Instagram accounts with more than one million followers each have already been removed. These removals came after posting videos recorded with smart glasses that featured women being approached in public. These creators gained popularity through POV-style content. This content gave viewers the impression they were seeing events directly through the glasses.

Privacy Concerns Around Smart Glasses

Unlike smartphones, smart glasses allow users to record photos and videos discreetly while appearing to have a normal conversation. This has sparked growing concerns about privacy, consent, and whether people can even tell when they are being recorded.

Critics argue that the technology makes it easier to capture footage without drawing attention. Therefore, it raises questions about responsible use of wearable AI devices.

Enforcement Details Still Unclear

While Instagram has announced the policy, it has not yet explained exactly how it will determine whether a video qualifies as harassment. Furthermore, the company has also not confirmed whether creators will receive warnings before content is removed. Moreover, it is unclear if repeated violations could lead to account suspensions.

The announcement comes amid broader scrutiny of AI-powered smart glasses and their growing capabilities. Meta has said its AI glasses include privacy safeguards such as a recording indicator light that flashes whenever photos or videos are being captured. Additionally, newer devices automatically disable recording if the indicator is tampered with.

As wearable AI devices become more mainstream, platforms like Instagram are facing increasing pressure to balance technological innovation with user privacy and safety. The latest crackdown signals that while smart glasses may represent the future of hands-free content creation, using them to secretly record or harass people will not be tolerated on the platform.
