Chhattisgarh Launches 24×7 ‘Ration ATM’ in Raipur, Bringing Monthly Rice Access Anytime

Chhattisgarh has introduced the Annapurti Grain ATM, an automated foodgrain dispensing system designed to make the state’s Public Distribution System (PDS) more accessible and convenient for beneficiaries. The initiative allows eligible ration card holders to collect their allocated foodgrains 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This reduces their dependence on the operating hours of traditional ration shops. The rollout has begun across three districts.

How does the Ration ATM work?

The Annapurti Grain ATM works through an automated authentication and dispensing process. Beneficiaries can authenticate their identity using Aadhaar-linked details/biometric verification. After this step, the machine dispenses the foodgrain entitlement assigned to them. The technology is designed to make distribution quicker while reducing manual intervention. Moreover, the machines can reportedly store up to 2,500 kg of foodgrains. This feature allows multiple beneficiaries to collect their allotted ration without having to wait for a conventional ration shop to open.

Why is this important?

For many beneficiaries, collecting subsidised foodgrains can involve waiting in queues and adjusting their schedules around ration shop timings. A 24×7 automated system could make the process considerably more flexible, particularly for people who work during conventional shop hours. Furthermore, the initiative also aims to strengthen transparency and accuracy in foodgrain distribution. Annapurti Grain ATMs were developed to provide a faster and more precise way of delivering food entitlements through the PDS. In addition, biometric authentication helps ensure that the ration reaches the intended beneficiary.

The introduction of grain ATMs reflects a wider push to use technology to modernise India’s food distribution network. With Chhattisgarh now adopting the technology, the initiative could offer beneficiaries a more convenient, faster and technology-driven way to access essential food supplies.
