Vir Das Gets Third International Emmy Nomination For ‘Fool Volume’

Vir Das has reached another milestone on the international stage. His Netflix comedy special Vir Das: Fool Volume has been nominated in the Comedy category at the 2026 International Emmy Awards, giving Das his third nomination and making him the first Indian performer to receive three International Emmy nominations. The recognition comes three years after he won the International Emmy for Comedy for Vir Das: Landing. His first nomination came in 2021 for Vir Das: For India. For Das, however, Fool Volume is not simply another entry in that journey. The special came out of an unexpected problem that could have derailed the entire project.

A comedy special that began with silence

Das lost his voice shortly before he was due to film Fool Volume. Instead of abandoning the project, he rewrote the material in silence.

The special was eventually filmed across Mumbai, London and New York, with Das performing much of it without rehearsal. That unusual process became part of the show’s identity, with themes around silence, happiness, foolishness and finding one’s voice running through the special.

That backstory also gives the latest nomination a different significance.

Das has previously described For India as the project that made him realise Indian comedy could find a place on a global stage. Landing then took that journey further by winning the International Emmy for Comedy in 2023.

Now, Fool Volume has brought him back into the conversation.

‘The third feels deeply personal’

Speaking about the nomination, Das said the first recognition felt surreal, while the second felt like validation. This time, he described the moment as deeply personal.

He also said he felt both excitement and pressure after Landing won, but does not want to measure Fool Volume against his earlier work.

Each special, he said, has its own voice and its own journey.

That attitude is perhaps reflected in the way Fool Volume came together. Rather than trying to recreate what worked with Landing, Das ended up building a special around an experience that forced him to rethink his performance.

India gets two nominations

Das is not the only Indian nominee at this year’s International Emmys.

SonyLIV’s Real Kashmir Football Club has also received a nomination in the Drama Series category. The series is based on the real-life story of Real Kashmir FC and stars Manav Kaul and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.

In the Comedy category, Fool Volume is competing against Argentina’s Division Palermo – Season 2, the UK’s Man vs Baby and Spain’s Old Dog, New Tricks.

The 2026 International Emmy winners will be announced in New York on November 23.

For Das, the latest nomination adds another chapter to a journey that started with taking Indian stand-up to an international awards platform.

And this time, the story behind the nomination is almost as unusual as the nomination itself: a comedy special that began when its comedian temporarily lost his voice has now found its way to the International Emmys.
