Navratri Garba Becomes a Space for LGBTQIA+ Inclusion

Every Navratri, over 80,000 young people gather at Vadodara’s Lakshmi Vilas Palace for Garba celebrations hosted by the Gaekwad royal family. As reported by The Hindu, the festivities go beyond dance and devotion, highlighting a larger story of inclusion and acceptance.

How Garba Creates Space for LGBTQIA+ Inclusion

For members of the LGBTQIA+ community, cultural celebrations can offer opportunities to express themselves, connect with others, and feel a sense of belonging. At Lakshmi Vilas Palace, Garba becomes more than a festive tradition. It brings people together through music, dance, and shared cultural experiences, creating opportunities for LGBTQIA+ participants to embrace their identities while staying connected to their roots.

A Traditional Celebration With a Contemporary Meaning

Garba is an integral part of Gujarat’s Navratri celebrations, traditionally performed in honour of Goddess Durga. However, its significance can extend beyond religious devotion.

The celebrations at Lakshmi Vilas Palace highlight how cultural traditions can also encourage conversations around representation and acceptance. By bringing diverse communities together, Garba reflects how longstanding traditions can evolve while retaining their cultural significance.

Ultimately, the celebration is about more than the dance floor. It highlights the importance of creating spaces where people can participate, express themselves, and feel that they belong.
