OpenAI to Open Its First Office in India: ChatGPT CEO Sam Altman Shares Big Plans

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced in a post on X that ChatGPT will open its first office in New Delhi later this year. He described the growth of AI in India as “amazing to watch,” noting that the number of ChatGPT users in the country has quadrupled in the past year. India is currently OpenAI’s second-largest market in terms of user numbers. The company has already established a legal entity in India and has started hiring a local team to manage operations.

Affordable Plans for Indian Users

ChatGPT has recently launched its most affordable monthly plan in India at $4.60. This move targets the country’s nearly one billion internet users, making advanced AI tools accessible to a wide audience.

Altman said, “The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.”

Government Support and Vision

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Railways & Information Broadcasting, welcomed OpenAI’s move. He said, “OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation.”

The IndiaAI Mission aims to create a trusted and inclusive AI ecosystem, and OpenAI’s local office will contribute to this vision, ensuring AI benefits reach every citizen.

Competition in the Indian AI Market

OpenAI faces strong competition from global and local AI players in India. Google’s Gemini and AI startup Perplexity have launched offerings that make advanced AI features free for many users, creating a competitive landscape for ChatGPT in the country.

What’s Next

While OpenAI has yet to confirm the exact office location in New Delhi, more details about the office and upcoming activities will be shared soon. The company’s expansion signals a serious commitment to India, both as a market and a hub for AI innovation.

This move positions India as a key player in the global AI revolution, and with strong government backing and growing user adoption, the country could emerge as a leading hub for AI innovation in the coming years.
