Budding Creator Krisha Shah Sparks Debate After Sharing Her View On Abortion And Down Syndrome
Budding Creator Krisha Shah shares why she would choose abortion if she learned during pregnancy that her baby had Down syndrome.
Krisha Shah Opens Up About A Difficult Pregnancy Decision
Creator Krisha Shah has sparked discussion online after sharing her personal stance on a highly sensitive topic, prenatal diagnosis and abortion. In a recent Instagram Reel, Shah said that if she ever became pregnant and discovered that her baby had Down syndrome, she would choose to terminate the pregnancy. She acknowledged that some people might consider her “selfish” or “cruel,” but said she does not believe bringing a disabled child into the world should be based on love alone. Instead, Shah said parents also need to consider the life their child might have, the care they could require, the cruelty or discrimination they might face and what could happen to them if their parents were no longer around to care for them.
What Is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by having an extra copy of chromosome 21. It can affect a person’s physical development, learning and overall health, although the experience can vary significantly from one person to another.
Some people with Down syndrome may need additional medical, educational or daily-life support, while many lead active and fulfilling lives with the right support and opportunities.
Prenatal screening and diagnostic tests can identify whether a pregnancy has a higher likelihood of Down syndrome or confirm the condition. Such results can leave expecting parents facing deeply personal decisions about their pregnancy and the support their child may need.
“The Hardest Decision A Parent Can Make”
Shah framed her perspective around what parents believe is best for their child, even before birth.
“The hardest decision a parent can make is deciding what they believe is best for their child, even before they’re born,” she said in the Reel. Her comments have opened up a wider conversation around prenatal diagnoses, disability, quality of life and reproductive choice.
Why Are Her Comments So Sensitive?
Conversations around Down syndrome and abortion can be particularly sensitive because they involve two deeply personal issues: reproductive autonomy and perceptions of disability.
While some parents may choose to continue a pregnancy after a prenatal diagnosis and prepare for the support their child may need, others may make a different decision based on their individual circumstances, beliefs and understanding of the diagnosis.
Shah presented her statement as her own personal decision rather than a universal answer. However, putting such a sensitive opinion online can naturally invite strong reactions from audiences with very different experiences and perspectives.
Her Reel ultimately brings a difficult question into the public space: how should parents define what they believe is best for their child when making decisions before birth?
