And if your algorithm’s figured this out, the chances of stumbling upon the name Dr Bro is very high. This young YouTuber from Bangalore, Karnataka is one of the most loved vloggers in India, especially among Kannada-speaking audiences.
Gagan Srinivas in the Past
Gagan Srinivas was born on 21 October 2000 into a simple Brahmin family on the outskirts of Bengaluru. His father Srinivas works as a temple priest and his mother Padmavati is a homemaker. Like many middle-class kids, Gagan grew up balancing traditional family values and aspirations. Although academics weren’t his strong suit, he excelled in extracurricular activities like drama, singing, and speeches.
At just 17 years old, he started working to support himself. Some of his early jobs involved driving and delivering in Bangalore. He also sold homemade products before content creation. At the time, the young boy he didn’t know that his entrepreneurial spirit would soon take him places he’d never expected. In fact, Gagan dropped out after failing his first year of Pre-University. But as they say, failure eventually leads to success.
When and how did Gagan get started with Dr Bro?
In 2016, Gagan Srinivas launched his YouTube channel and focused on creating comedy sketches and celebrity interviews. This eventually gained traction and got him close to a couple or more thousand views.
By 2018, he had rebranded himself as Dr Bro, a name now synonymous with regional travel vlogging and storytelling. Starting with vlogs about Karnataka’s unique culture and unexplored gems, he soon expanded to travelling across India to states like Kerala, Assam, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh.
His signature and greeting, “Namaskara Devru“, is a warm and familiar phrase that instantly connects him with his audience. Today, his channel has 2.64 million subscribers and counting! His Instagram has 2.8 million followers.
Go Parvasa: From the entrepreneur within Gagan
Beyond YouTube, Gagan’s entrepreneurial journey started after he launched Go Parvasa, a travel company. With Go Parvasa, Gagan and his team provide exclusive travel packages and unique experiences to his fans and customers. The company has also created job opportunities, hired for positions like International Operations Executive, Domestic Operations Executive, Visa Experts, and more for many who were once unemployed. While he’s growing successfully himself, he is also making sure to do his bit to give back to the community.
Notable adventures and controversies
Dr Bro isn’t just about travel and comedy, he explored risky and uncharted territories, both literally and figuratively. One of his most talked about and watched videos featured an interview with a Somalian pirate named Mosaca. In this gripping vlog, Mosaca narrated his journey from looting ships on the high seas to eventually working for the military after his arrest. Surprisingly, the pirate was a fan of Bollywood films and even conversed with Gagan in Kannada, leaving viewers crazy at Dr Bro’s knack for storytelling.
While he’s extremely popular and has a huge fan following, he’s faced his share of thorns on the path too. During a trip to China, Dr Bro stirred controversy when he praised the country’s education system, contrasting it with India’s deep-rooted issues like caste and religion. Some appreciated his bold interpretation and others labelled him a “traitor”. Defending himself, Gagan emphasized the importance of development over divisive politics. Love him or hate him, one thing is clear from Dr Bro, he won’t stop speaking his mind.
Where’s Dr Bro heading to next?
