Pinterest Fights Back Against AI Slop with New Labels and Controls

Pinterest has been known for its beautiful, human-created images, from wedding ideas and home decor to art, beauty, travel, and recipes. But lately, users have been frustrated. Many say their feed is full of fake-looking AI-generated images. This is often called “AI slop”, low-quality or unrealistic visuals created using generative AI tools.

Now, Pinterest is doing something about it. The company has announced two major steps:

  1. Labelling AI images.
  2. Allowing users to reduce the number of AI pins they see.

This is Pinterest’s way of fighting back and keeping the platform enjoyable for people who love real, inspiring, human-made content.

“AI-Modified” Labels Coming Soon

Pinterest will start adding clear labels on images that are generated or changed using AI. When you tap and open an image in close-up, you’ll see an “AI modified” label at the bottom left corner of the Pin.

How does Pinterest figure out if an image is AI?

  • It checks the image’s metadata (hidden information inside the image file).
  • It also uses its own smart system of classifiers to catch AI images that don’t have obvious signs.

If you’re a creator and your image is wrongly marked as AI, don’t worry. Pinterest says you can appeal the label.

New Option: “See Fewer AI Pins”

Pinterest is not just labelling AI images—it’s also giving people control. A new option will let you choose to see fewer AI Pins in your feed, especially in popular categories like:

  • Beauty
  • Art

Over time, this feature will expand to more areas like fashion, home, and food. Here’s how it works:

  • When you see an AI-generated pin, tap the three-dot menu at the bottom right of the image.
  • Choose the “see fewer” option.

This sends a signal to Pinterest’s system, telling it to show you less AI content in the future. While Pinterest didn’t give an exact date for this feature, the company says it’s coming soon.

Why This Matters for Indian Users

Pinterest is quite popular in India for:

  • DIY home ideas
  • Wedding inspiration
  • Beauty looks
  • Travel planning
  • Art and design references

But with the rise of AI-generated images, many users feel they can’t trust what they see anymore. Some have even said the platform feels “dead” because of too much fake content. The new tools show that Pinterest is finally listening. And for Indian creators, bloggers, and brands, this is good news, because now real content can stand out again.

More Tools Coming to Tackle AI Issues

Pinterest says this is just the beginning. It will roll out more tools in the coming months to improve how AI is handled on the site. The goal is not to completely remove AI content but to make sure it doesn’t ruin the user experience. The company also believes that AI can be useful, but only when used thoughtfully. “Gen AI content on Pinterest should enhance users’ ability to discover and act on their inspiration,” said CTO Matt Madrigal, adding that the platform is taking a careful, user-first approach.

Will Pinterest Be Able to Fix the AI Slop Problem?

For months, Reddit users and media outlets have been talking about the rise of AI content on Pinterest. People are tired of seeing the same unrealistic images in search results and board suggestions. With these new changes:

  • Real creators get a fair chance to shine again.
  • Users can get back to what they love about Pinterest—genuine inspiration.

Pinterest says it will keep improving and add more features to give users the power to decide what they want to see.

Pinterest’s new steps may finally help bring back the charm of the platform, whether you’re a bride-to-be, an art lover, or a home chef looking for ideas—real content matters. And Pinterest is now taking the right steps to protect that experience.
